Tecnicamente, a GTD não tem diferença em relação à classe GTD Pro na IMSA Weathertech Sportscar Championship, já que usa também carros com o regulamento GT3.
A única diferença é apenas na escalação de pilotos, já que na GTD podem correr os competidores amadores, mais conhecidos como Gentleman Drivers, que pagam para competir.
O regulamento em relação à escalação de pilotos em cada carro é o seguinte:
1. ROLEX 24 AT DAYTONA
- All the teams must have 4 drivers each car;
- A maximum of 1 platinum + 1 gold rated driver or a maximum of 2 gold rated drivers are allowded in each car.
2. 12H SEBRING, SAHLEN SIX HOURS AT THE GLEN, IMSA BATTLE ON THE BRICKS AND PETIT LE MANS
- All the teams must have 3 drivers each car;
- A maximum of 1 platinum or 1 gold rated driver is allowded in each car.
3. SPRINT ROUNDS
- All the teams must have 2 drivers each car;
- A maximum of 1 platinum or 1 gold rated driver is allowded in each car.
